CD Reviews

Stunningly joyous and swinging!
Gary Coffrin | San Jose, California, USA | 12/30/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is a stunningly energetic, upbeat and swinging album! This superbly produced live CD has gorgeous sound (perhaps with the bass a bit forward, but still amazingly detailed and musical).

All of the album's tunes are associated with Fats Waller, who died too young at age 39 in 1943. Ralph Sutton was arguably the best and certainly the most consistent pianist to play in the stride style in the second half of the 20th century.

The swinging group includes trumpeter Jon-Erik Kellso, who bends and shapes notes in ways that continually astound. Kellso has a very breathy and 'vocal' approach to the trumpet that has become rare in modern times. Brian Ogilvie on tenor sax and clarinet is supportive and tasteful. Rhythm guitarist Marty Grosz plays with an energetic command and knowledge of the music. His occasional vocals - while not those of a trained singer - have humor and personality.

Frankie Capp may be the best and most dynamic drummer Ralph Sutton ever played with. He propels the group and solos with skill and energy. Bassist Dave Green is musical throughout.

Sutton at age 76 knocks your socks off! Sutton plays powerful and swinging solos, and also drives things along with tasteful and rock-solid accompaniment. Sutton is a two-handed pianist of the highest order and he rocks the joint with a strong and untiring left hand.

If you like the swing of Count Basie or the upbeat music of Louis Armstrong, this album would be a joyous beginning step to explore the music of Fats Waller and to hear the one of the best stride-influenced albums of recent decades.

The masterful piano, swinging ensemble and unfailing rhythm will keep your face smiling and your foot stomping. This is one of my favorite jazz CDs (I own 1500+). Five stars."
