A Master Shows His Mettle
Michael Williamsen | USA | 04/12/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"In this day of techno-synth and audio clutter, it is even more powerful to hear these classic songs in such a clear, pure form. It isn't so much where Chet places the notes, but where he doesn't. A truly great artist knows how many instruments are too many on a track, and how to convey the essence of a song. At this, Chet is an undisputed master. I listened to Carribbean Guitar when I was a kid, and still haven't heard another guitar album with this clear, pure sound. A must have!"
Smooth and alive

"These are great albums showcasing Chets wide range from straight ahead jazz to some very cool pop. If you dont know Chester Atkins then your younger than I am. If you do you will probably be surprised by his broad and impressive range of style. This is 'soft stuff' ala lounge music almost, but sophisticated and elegant, always helps me put rush hour into a less frantic and more humorous and relaxed perspective. My 12 year old thinks dad's gone nuts (I am a lawyer and devoted rock and jazz guitarist) when I listen to Chester. There's much to hear and more to learn. This is the man who helped to create the Nashville sound of the late fifties and early sixties-polished entertainment industry in its own enclave, but roots music.
Travelin has a number of over-played favorites. Its not bad but its worth it just to have Caribbean. What always rewards this guitarist/reviewer is the really great arrangments, clean studio sound and of course some great playing. A great break from rock, pop, and all the other stuff we are bombarded with daily. You wont regret this one."
Chet Atkins is so versatile!

"My first Chet Atkins album was Teensville back in the early 60's. Chet's cover of Don Gibson's hit "Oh Lonesome Me!" was sheer musical joy. White Silver Sands, with a solo by Boots Randolph, was also a favorite from Teensville. I enjoy old-time country music, but none of Chet's country-flavored covers of country hits appealed to me much, although I always appreciated his virtuosity and talent. I discovered Carribean Guitar .... There were three songs that brought me to my knees - Montego Bay, Wild Orchids, and Mayan Dance. Sublime work and arranging by a musical genius!"
