CD ReviewsThe Brooding, Moody Music Of The Great Chet Baker! Jana L. Perskie | New York, NY USA | 10/13/2003 (5 out of 5 stars) "Chet Baker was a brilliant musician who had no equal at creating a mellow, brooding mood. Simplicity of elements and unpretentious improvisation are his hallmarks. The music in this compilation is from 1952 and 1953 with Gerry Mulligan, baritone, Russ Freeman, piano, Stan Getz, tenor sax, Shelly Mann, drums, and Chet Baker, trumpet. It is probable that the performances recorded here were never surpassed by Baker. He was at his peak during this period and was voted the country's best jazz trumpeter of 1954 by both Downbeat and Metronome Magazine. The 14 tracks were all recorded in Los Angeles and include:
"Freeway," "My Old Flame," "Five Brothers," and "My Funny Valentine." Baker and Stan Getz are also featured in "Come Out Wherever You Are," "What's New," and "Half Nelson." Also included are "All The Things You Are," "Moonlight Becomes You," and "Happy Little Sunbeam."A brilliant album and the Best of Baker!! Jana" |
