This disc presents the first recordings of Rubinstein' s major piano works. The first important fact about the first sonata is have been the first one composed by a Russian. Id t dates from 1847-1848 (Anton was 19 by then) . The influence of Mendelssohn is obvious.
Howard makes an impressive reading of this score, filled of flaming passion.
The Third sonata begins with a declamatory tune and slowly it increments his ornamentation through dreamy passages of sheer lyricism. This work seems to have been the favorite page of Anton in the most of his musical tours. Along the first movement you may feel certain echoes from Faureian scents, beautifully harmonized by a theme in Waltz form. The Andante seems to preannounce the visible introspectiveness that features Brahms Intermezzos.
Since I bought this album I usually listen it, being one of my favorite albums that arouse admirable praises among my circle of hard to die listeners.
Go for this album. Recorded in December 1980.
