"100 Best Adagio Edits" more appropriately titled

"Not a full review but come comments on this purchase.

1. The Albinoni Adagio which leading this set is an edit/excerpt which cuts the last few minutes of the piece. If you're looking for complete performances, even complete movements that haven't been cut down to size, this isn't the series for you. Nice for background music.

2. Don't let the title fool you. The selections here are slow, and some of the selections are somewhat pastoral, but others crescendo quite bit. You won't be falling asleep or meditating to the music in this set. As soon as one piece lulls you off to sleep, the next will wake you up with a startle. These are adagios in the generic sense of the word.

3. The recordings are consistently clean and clear recordings, with little high end noise from analog sources that often shows up in these kind of compilations. The performances are quite good.

4. If you know what you are getting, I would say, for the price, these EMI 100 Best collections are a real bargain. I discovered them when I ordered the set of 100 Best Christmas Carols and was quite pleased with that purchase.

5. For someone looking to explore the world of classical music, they are a great starting point.

For those who enjoy this kind of music check Vaughan Williams Fantasia on Tallis & Greensleeves / Barber Adagio / Pachelbel Canon / Tchaikovsky Serenade (Stereo Hybrid SACD) or Vaughan Williams: Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis; Barber: Adagio for Strings; Grainger: Irish Tune from County. Barenboim also conducted a fabulous set of English pastoral selections with the English Chamber Orchestra with Pinchas Zukerman on violin that includes Vaughan William's Fantasia on Greensleeves, Oboe Concerto, and the Lark Ascending. Hard to find, on the DG label, but still my favorite collection of classical music ever. You can get it on Amazon used, and at Arkiv [...]."
