Synopsis

To some folks, Judah Bauer has in recent times been making more compelling records with his DIY side project 20 Miles than with his day-job trio, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. Without question, there's something very appealing about the jagged riffs and raunchy grooves Bauer and company are throwing down. And it's all done in a seemingly organic fashion--most of these tracks were laid down informally in Bauer's NYC apartment with brother (and chief partner-in-crime) Donovan and a steady rotation of friends, including the North Mississippi Allstars. This is swaggering, standard-issue boogie rock, tossed together with elements of funk and punk and served on a solid bed of basic blues--and it's irresistible. While this third album has less of an overt connection to blues than previous efforts, the soul and spirit of the blues permeate every track. 20 Miles may not set the world on fire, but fans of stripped-to-the-gills blues-rock will surely appreciate this shabby-chic slab of songs. --Marc Greilsamer

CD Reviews

Can't get over how cool this record is
dirtymcgee | Winston-Salem | 05/12/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Real rock n roll music is what this album is. With the emphasis on the roll. I'm not going to break down this thing song by song 'cause it doesn't need to be. Throw this baby in and just listen till it's over. It's special music. Judah Bauer and his buddies have found a groove that is sorely and sadly missing from rock n roll these days. Rock n Roll is meant to be dirty and sloppy and these guys don't seem to mind the smell. I guess I've stated my little piece of the pie here, but seriously folks 20 Miles and Keep it Coming is what you've been looking for. Be sure to check out their other 2 records from Fat Possum."

"Jon Spencer's guitar player really shines here. I don't care much for Blues Explosion, but the stripped down blues riffs and steady rhythym got me rockin'. Should fit in well with the current garage/blues revival."
