Amazon.comThese are all fairly well known 20th century flute sonatas, but they do gain something from being programmed together like this. The comparisons and contrasts make for an interesting program. All of the pieces are winners, and so are the performances. Jiri Valek is one of Czechoslovakia's leading flutists, Josef Hala a highly experienced chamber player. Even in the Prokofiev, probably the most popular work in the program, their energetic, sensitive performance is as good as any on the market. Apparently the Martin was digitally recorded in 1989 to fill out the timing of an analog LP in its transfer to CD, an excellent idea. Recommended. --Leslie Gerber
