"There have been various reissues by Sony of Bernstein's El Amor Brujo from 1976 with Marilyn Horne and the NY Phil. This one is dead cheap on the used market, and it's incendiary. Bernstein conducts with thrilling passion, and although Horne lacks Spanish flavor, she is sturdy and dominating.
The coupling is Boulez's complete Three-Corndered Hat ballet, again with the NY PHil, from 1975. It's in clear, detailed sound, and althoug the reading is a bit cool, boulez clarifies every line of the score. Bernstein's recorded sound is a bit thin and edgy. No doubt it has been improved in remastering for the Royal Edition version at a higher price."
