"Haydn's six scherzos were written in 1761, soon after his appointment to the Esterhazy court, and were intended to show off the abilities of his orchestra. They are, in effect, minature symphonies, very terse and concentrated, and have been liked to Beethoven's bagatelles and the works of Webern.Huss and his orchestra give vivid, highly characterised accounts, alive to all the subtleties of Haydn's work. They are a fine original instruments group, and are recorded extremely clearly - listen to the way that the horns cut through the ensemble in places. For anyone who enjoys Haydn's early symphonies and appreciates vigorous authentic instruments, this disc is highly recommended."
