707 Truly Were MAGIC

"When 707 burst on the scene in the early 1980s, they were a breathe of fresh air. With a perfect balance of guitar driven rockers and piano ballads, they blew away most of their peers at the time. The driving force behind 707 was guitar extraordinaire Kevin Russell, who has always been under appreciated, and piano/songwriting genius, Duke McFadden. Duke's distinctive vocals and superb songwriting gave 707 their unique sound. However, with personnel problems looming, Duke left the band after just one album and 707 never again found their feet, with numerous vocalist changes over the next several albums. If the band had stayed intact, they would have rivaled Journey or REO Speedwagon in popularity. Now we come to the new release "Magic". This CD is filled with outtakes, b sides, unreleased songs and early demos from the first album period with Duke still at the helm. The CD is aptly titled, as this band was truly MAGIC. When most bands have unreleased material, it's usually easy to see why. Not so here, every song is gem, standing the test of time and bursting from the speakers with the raw energy and talent that these musicians possessed. If you remember any of the catchy tunes from the first 707 album, you will not be disappointed with this release. Also, be sure to pick up Duke McFadden's new release "Home Again", recorded just after he left 707. Fantastic songwriting, vocals, etc., also a five star.

"If you are just looking to download the hit "I Could Be Good For You," there is something funny about the version on this release. It does sound like the original studio recording, but there is a very strange edit in the instrumental section that sounds like a mistake. I have another version about ten seconds shorter than this one which sounds right to me.
Loved hearing this song on WRIF in Detroit when I was growing up, and it is still impressive now. Have to admit I am not all that familiar with the rest of their material, but "I Could Be Good For You" is well worth adding to your collection. Just maybe not the version on this CD..."
