CD Reviews

Good Old-Fashioned Punk

"Awwww, the memories. Growing up as a School-Kid in dismal London back in the 70's '999' were always my favorite punk band. More fun & less serious than some of their contemporaries (i.e.: Clash/Sex Pistols/Stiff Little Fingers) and certainly less precious than the admittedly brilliant 'Jam'. The songs were short, loud with a good healthy sing-along chorus. 'Emergency' was always their best known track but I think their most punkish songs (is that good English) are 'Nasty Nasty' & the speed-riff 'No Pity', I love trying to sing along the lyrics on that one (Not out loud of course). Although I could never quite get away from the fact that Nick Cash sounded a bit too much like Noddy Holder of 'Slade' on some tracks. Just check out 'Homicide' and see what I mean. All their good stuff is here of course and it's the legit original recordings too (unlike the rip-off CD 'Emergency' which I bought by mistake a while back). If you like good old fashioned punk with a pinch of fun and plenty of energy then pick this puppy up. This is the real old-school of the Punk Day's"

"INDEED ! 1996 compilation of all the early singles of this criminally underrated and vastly imitated (think Olga of Toy Dolls meets Peter And The Test Tube Babies) coz these dudes came first. They already were a pub rock band in 76,and jumped on the 77 punk wagon without loosing their rock'n roll edge.Fun/punk/rock'nroll/pub rock, the energy present in these bass driven, razor sharp, incredibly loud dual guitar songs is unbelievable, and so is the excellent sound I honestly did'nt expect from recordings this old.The last 3 songs flirt with reggae in typical 80's fashion but they work for me.Another outstanding release by Captain Oi !"
