CD ReviewsA gem from Horseshoe Bay R. Beatty | Kansas | 03/10/2005 (5 out of 5 stars) " Adrienne Pierce is a real discovery, and this CD should be the start of something great. Take a chance and buy it, you won't regret it." Piercing wit and beauty. Stephen Doig | New Zealand | 12/28/2005 (4 out of 5 stars) "Adrienne Pierce is a talented and unconventional Vancouver-based singer/songwriter and a relative newcomer to the music scene. Her well-crafted debut album Small Fires, which remains Pierces only record at time of writing, is something I took to immediately. Working in Adrienne Pierces favour is that she strongly resembles one of my all-time favourite artists - Abra Moore. Like Abra, Pierce's voice is a pleasing paradox - it sounds girlish and youthful yet also conveys having been around the block once or twice.
Pierce's dreamy, impressionistic and quirky pop songs ruminate on such varied subjects as love, escapism, insecurity, and in the case of the single 'Arizona' - incompatibility. Her songs are immediate but also have a way of sneaking up on you which is a neat trick for such a relatively young artist. 'Falling Asleep', 'Small' and 'Absinthe Minded' are particularly good examples of this. Small Fires may well be the modest achievement it's album title suggests it to be, but these are still songs that have the capacity to ignite sparks of pure pleasure. An interesting, edgy and enjoyable listen. Like this? Try> Abra Moore - Sing" |
