AHMAD JAMAL'S SUPERB "HAPPY MOODS"-FINALLY ISSUED ON CD!
RBSProds | Deep in the heart of Texas | 10/13/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)
"Five HUGE Stars !! Legendary jazz piano virtuoso & jazz trio innovator Ahmad Jamal finally sees his great "Happy Moods" recording issued on CD. Indeed the complete "Listen to the Ahmad Jamal Quintet" recording is also included making this '2 LPs on 1 CD' a 'must-have' for Jamal fans and those who have not heard this piano genius at work over the decades. Overflowing with hipness and dazzling performances, Jamal's 'piano-bass-drum'-trio configured unit and his unusual quintet-configured unit are superb with Jamal displaying his great pianism, which has continued non-stop into the 21st century. Mr Jamal, who heavily influenced the legendary Miles Davis, shows he is the master of the up-tempo swinger (Raincheck & Pavanne), the lush ballad (I'll Never Stop Loving You & For All We Know), the blues (Excerpt From The Blues) and the latin-beat dazzler (Rhumba No 2). "Happy Moods" is Ahmad Jamal at his best with those patented swirling intros, percussive codas, and wonderous solos using the entire keyboard and space. My Highest Recommendation. Five JAZZY Stars!!
(*1 Audio CD, 20 tracks, with booklet, Import, from the original recording company: ARGO. As J. M. Pease notes, the track listing does not include the tracks from "Listen to the Ahmad Jamal Quintet".
*Thank you, record labels, for issuing "Count'em 88" and "Happy Moods" on CD as requested, I now call for Mr Jamal's excellent "Tranquility" AND "The Bright the Blue and the Beautiful": Ahmad Jamal with voices. If you please!!)"
Wondrous album

"I have the original vinyl LP - scaratchy but fantastic sound quality behind the surface noise. Get the CD - the music is exquisite and just perfect."
Joyful Jamal

"Received the CD today and played it "cover to cover" (something I rarely do). Must back up everything our friend from Texas said. This is superb joyful music and, containing as it does two different sessions, offers great variety. Recording quality is first class making me realise how much we missed when we had to rely on vinyl."
A Splendid Reissue

"What a great time it is to be a fan of Jazz. Even though the 50's and 60's are long gone, we're still treated to a steady trickle of reissues of our favorite artists, sometimes even getting recordings that have lain on the shelves for decades and only now are seeing the light of day.
Simply put, this is a great reissue, with Ahmad Jamal working intelligently and creatively through a number of standards and new compositions. Those who say Jamal is only effective in a live setting are closing their ears to some of the finest studio jazz around. There is real energy in this release and it's well worth your time.
Does the music bear out the title? Yes, it is a happy record, but no more joyous than any other recording Jamal has commited himself to. Truth be told, the real joy was finding this cd by accident after having not listened to Jamal for several years. Happy Moods, indeed."
