Alan Bown More Cheeky Pop Whimsey Than Solid Psych
12/05/1999
(2 out of 5 stars)

"Unfortunately this is another CD that I have purchased recently on my quest to find all of the great 60s psych, no matter how obscure. In my travels I have discovered allot of gems in the rough, but sorry folks, this ain't one of them. Although the CD contains some tight instrument arrangements, the songs are pathetically simple and painfully cheeky. A good way to discribe this CD would be if Syd Barrett released an album when he was 6 years old. There is 1 great song on this CD though called "My Girl The Month Of May" which stands way above the remaining dribble. Thus, the 2 stars instead of 1."
Psychadelic pop at its very, very best.

"An extremely underrated album. It should be far more publicised. For example, the track 'We Can Help You' would make great music for an advert. I can only advise more people to go out and buy this album because its filled with great songs and impeccable playing on the musicians part. One thing that particularly stands out is the tight relationship between the bass and drums which give each of the songs a really distinctive and solid edge. I am a great fan of all material by The Alan Bown! and it should certainly not be ignored that during the late 1960s, this band was one of Britain's favourite live performers. Buy this album and tell your friends to buy it too. You will not be dissapointed. To me, it is up there with Sgt. Pepper as far as psychadelic pop is concerned but it deserves much more appreciation and recognition. A classic album."
The Alan Bown on CD at Last!

"Up until a few months ago I'd been searching, in vain, for music clips or mp3s of Alan Bown, a band I remembered from the 60's. An English band mate played Alan Bown for the guys & we covered a tune or two. But now, 33 years later, I couldn't remember what they sounded like. Along came the first mp3 - Toyland. Bam! It came back to me. The lysergic soaked mid 60's. Little Leslie, Penny for Your Thoughts, whoa! Then I ordered and, six weeks later, got the CD. Hours of entertainment here!"
