"I first heard Albrecht Mayer last fall when he played with Orpheus Chamber Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, and I was very impressed with his virtuosity in a Strauss concerto. Now we have this fine recording of Bach cantatas arranged for oboe instead of voice. The sounds of the oboe, at times augmented by the baroque choir and backed by the English Concert, are entirely natural, serene, and uplifting. You feel the oboe is as idiomatic to Bach as the harpsichord. Albrecht Mayer is principal oboe of the Berlin Philharmonic and a very talented virtuoso. You can listen over and over to this CD and be transported to a world of tranquility, order, and reverence."
