"I would put Perl's accounts of these 6 famous sonatas alongside many of the well-known (and more expensive) modern pianists. Perl, like his fellow Chilean, Claudio Arrau, is emotionally connected to these pieces while also maintaining an intellectual understanding of their architecture and discourse (i.e. Perl's playing of the First Movement of the "Appassionata" successfully connected the motifs into a grand expression while a lofty player such as Rudolf Serkin fails to unify the movement to me). When you factor in such thoughtful playing along with the low-budget price and truly gorgeous DDD recording quality (the piano has just the right amount of ambience while still maintaining a bright note-attack), Perl is a real contender."
