"It's a common assumption that the onset of the war led to the collapse of the dance bands. Whilst that was a factor, it certainly didn't happen overnight, and this clutch from Ambrose shows there was plenty of mileage yet to run. And that despite frequent enforced changes in personnel, although the shortage of shellac adversely affected the incidence of recording sessions. Highlights of this compilation include Evelyn Dall singing Cole Porter's "My Heart Belongs To Daddy", but Anne Shelton takes the lion's share of the vocals, including "Fools Rush In" and "Swinging On A Star". It's a delightful evocation of the songs that cheered a war-weary Britain.
