CD Reviews

A Great Album of American Favorites
Indiana Opera Buff | Fort Wayne, IN United States | 01/13/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I first purchased this as an LP in the mid-80's. I practically wore the grooves off the record and eventually purchased the CD. Miss Horne is in fabulous voice here and she sings with flawless "American" diction. By that I mean that she doesn't roll her R's or produce any other of the mannerisms of some singers when they sing in English. Song interpretations range from soothing to dramatic and everything in between. Her rendition of "Grand Old Flag" is a tour de force. This CD is a "must listen" every year around the Fourth of July."

"I've held on to my cassette version of this concert for decades, since I heard her sing it on PBS, and finally I have it on CD. All American chestnuts, from a delicate "Beautiful Dreamer" to a rabble -rousing "You're a Grand Old Flag" to a deeply reverent "At The River". Horne serves up a big slice of apple pie with generosity and good spirits. I've rarely been so happy to find a recording on CD."
