"For real melodies, real poetry, get this CD. With his voice and a single acoustic guitar, this guy demolishes entire record stores of "popular" music."
Modern American Folk

"Calhoun is one of the best songwriter/singer/poets around. His music is shaped by traditions as varied as Celtic, American Folk, and Chicago blues. His music and poetry ranges from John Prine to Robert Burns, Leonard Cohen to EE Cummings. It is at once contemporary and timeless.
The recurring theme of the cd is, like the mythical bird in the title, rebirth. Because he looks unflinchingly at life, many have called Calhoun's songs depressing, but they are the opposite. As he puts his finger on the source of each particular brand of suffering, he also finds out the reserves we possess to survive it. His finest images flash and cut deeply and yet each song has a quality of mercy.
This is a fine piece of American music, well worth having."

"Just throwing my 2 cents in... I really like this CD. It's really good music. Calhoun is a 'folk' musician but Joan Baez this is not. More like John Prine or Bonnie Rait. The songs seem to be mostly stories from his life. Some big, some small. I think it's worth your time to try a few samples to see if its your style. That's how I got started on him."
