Attention: Diction Disorder

"Young, out gay singer Andrew Suvalsky's debut CD displays good arrangements and an endearing go-for-broke song selection that finds him careening from Peter Frampton to Cole Porter with stops for Roy Orbison in between (even though k.d. lang officially now owns "Crying", it was brave of Suvalsky to make a stab at it anyway). Where Suvalsky's strong points are his phrasing and modulation of his often sweet tenor voice, unfortunately he's undone by a speach impediment that finds him frequently mangling his "s" sounds. Case in sad point: the opening track comes off as "Do You Want to Danth"; even the Divine Miss M. would have to wince at that one. It sets up an auto-cringe factor for the rest of the album. If Suvalsky ever can overcome that diction problem, he'll join the front ranks of singers in the classic cabaret mold. Until then, VINTAGE POP AND THE JAZZ SIDES will have to serve as a fitfully disappointing introduction to a singer who wasn't quite ready to record his first CD."
