"Well I personally think the album has potential. Even though she is trying new styles she is still an amazingly spectacular performer which is why I will always support her. This album is a fresh new way to look and listen to anggun and yet she is still sophisticated and is just letting herself go. I do agree that her old stuff is excellent too but maybe thats what makes anggun, anggun because she can do anything and it suits her just fine."

ANGGUN'S NEW DIRECTION...some familar elements tho.

"First off, discard what William Cornell said in his review. Yes, our lovely Indonesian princess Anggun is trying some new things here...there is a big urban and electronic influence on her latest "Elevation", BUT the beauty of this record is that whatever style she tries on, it still somehow comes out sounding like ANGGUN!! And that, my friends, is a beautiful thing. It all comes down to her unique, sensual, friendly, soulful voice that is part Annie Lennox, part Cher, part ???, and her distinctive songwriting style. AND in case William forgot, before 1997's self-titled English debut, aka "Snow On The Sahara", Anggun was a HARD ROCK/HEAVY METAL singer, along the lines of Bon Jovi or Metallica, so that was an artistic evolution...as is now "Elevation" and we have to embrace it as that's what artists do...they CHANGE and EVOLVE...ooooh the HORROR!!!!



You just have to get used to the new elements, that's all...here, it sounds like she was influenced by Beyonce in a big way, and that's not a bad thing, as she's one of the only urban artists that I like...I'm not a fan of mainstream R&B whatsoever, but the artists in that genre who try new things like Beyonce I like. There are some electronic dance influences too, like on the great catchy single "Crazy". She also collaborates with 2 rappers here and the songs work..."My Man" with Pras Michael from the Fugees, and the rocky, almost metallic "Stronger" with Big Al (no idea where he's from but he's like a rock rapper, like Sonny from POD or Zach De La Rocka from Rage Against The Machine).



There are also sweet shades of older mellower Anggun, like the beautiful lullaby she sings to her baby girl, "Eden In Her Eyes", and the album closer "World", which is like an older wiser "Look Into Yourself", and if enough people in the US heard this song, it could be a HUGE hit here.



One recommendation...ONLY buy this deluxe 2CD edition of "Elevation" because it has the album in both French AND English (it works amazingly well in both languages), the English track "EIHE" is on the French disc, the French disc has 2 interludes...one hilarious and one touching of Anggun actually singing to her baby daughter, calming her down...you hear the baby actually about to cry but Anggun doesn't stop and she goes to sleep...really touching. Anggun's already a great mom...a great-LOOKING mom too, yow, Greg's a lucky SOB...and lastly, the English disc has 2 great remixes, of "Crazy", the first of the French version, and the second of the English version.



Just get used to the urban elements and the album sounds great, the songs are worthy of Anggun's catalogue, and it's a fine, fun, moving listening experience...and yeah, the pics are great, as always."
