"I was not familiar with Anne Walsh, and frankly, it was the title of this CD that drew my attention. "Pretty World" is probably best known as one of the early recordings from Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66. I've always enjoyed the song, & this title led me to the hope that this CD would include some new recordings of Bossa Nova & Brazilian style music. I have not been disappointed. However, Ms. Walsh has assembled a thoughtful collection of songs from a diverse group of composers. Yes, there are classic songs from Jobim, Mendes, Porter, and Rogers & Hammerstein, but also Suzanne Vega. In addition, she has collaborated with Joe Derenzo to create lyrics for compositions from jazz greats Keith Jarrett, Pat Metheny and Don Grolnick. I also appreciate her inclusion of "He Loves You"...a tribute to the inspired music of Bob Wilson & Seawind.



Ms. Walsh' vocals are clear & pure, & perfectly suited for this music. Credit for the great arrangements goes to Tom Zink, along with his wonderful playing on acoustic piano & Rhodes. The musicianship is excellent, & includes contemporary jazz bassist Brian Bromberg, Gary Meek on sax/flutes, and Oscar Castro Neves on acoustic guitar. There are many other musicians involved & they all play beautifully. This music includes Bossa Nova, contemporary jazz, poignant ballads, and the Great American Songbook. If you enjoy these styles of music, I believe you will love the beautiful voice of Anne Walsh & the music of "Pretty World"."
