"The young rock star with a flashy guitar and in-your-face attitude on the cover of this CD should have told me a thing or two about its contents. No false advertising here: Gomes delivers on both guitar flash and attitude. The funky grooves are in the pocket, but his overly distorted, squawk 'n' squeal guitar solos sound more like '80s glam-rock than the blues. That said, Gomes does deliver soulful vocals. And the gospel-tinged backup singers are right there with him. The songwriting is upbeat and catchy, but not without a few clunkers. On "Testify," for example, Gomes painfully rhymes the words "soul" and "ear hole" (still makes me cringe). Maybe I need another dose of this kid's medicine. Until then, consider me unconverted."
