Product DescriptionNewly reissued by Pan Classics, these mid-1990 recordings of music for cello and orchestra by the once exceedingly popular 19th c. composer and virtuoso cellist David Popper (1843-1913) were undertaken by the eminent cellist Antonio Meneses and the Basler Sinfonie-Orchester under the direction of Ronald Zollman. Amidst a selection of virtuosic, shorter works and the six-movement Suite, op. 50 is Poppers second cello concerto in e, op. 24. Mr. Meneses regularly appears in the music capitals of Europe, the Americas, and Asia as soloist and chamber player, appears at the worlds finest music festivals and claims a distinguished discography, including works by Bach, Brahms, Tchaikovsky and Villa-Lobos. Poppers music is always a means to an end; its charm and innovative impulse lies more in the inspired and technically refined details as in the whole as a compositional work. He was a master of the episodic, even when working in larger form.
