Best Ballads Album Ever
monadian | Meridian, NY | 01/08/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"There are rock ballads, and then there is April Wine's rock ballads. The original album, Best of April Wine's Rock Ballads, had two more cuts on it than the remade cd version. If you pick up the Greatest Hits cd, you'll have all the songs that were originally on the vinyl. I'm usually a heavy metal head banger kind of guy, but I also very much get into a lot of the classic 80's stuff. Rush, Boston, etc, just so you know where I'm coming from. April Wine is a hard rocking band from that same era, but they also produced some of the best slow rock songs ever. If you're looking for something to put on when you're trying to set a romantic mood with the better half, you can't go wrong with this. She'll probably be surprised and wonder where you picked up so much class!"
I bought this on vinyl in my Freshman year in college...

"I'll never forget it. Unfortunately, my copy was scratched so I gave it back to the guy I bought it from. At that time, I was just starting to get into April Wine beyond the original song which inspired me, which was "Just Between You And Me" (which is STILL one of the greatest power ballads ever). One of the things I remember about this album was the liner notes which pictured every single band member, as well as every single album that they had done up to "The Nature Of The Beast" (which was released in 1981 and was already their 14th album, to give you an idea of their prolificness).Admittedly, I didn't play much of the songs on this album except for "Just Between You And Me" (what can I say, I was literally in love with the song, and I only had the album for a week), but I do remember playing "Rock & Roll Is A Vicious Game" and I was impressed by Myles Goodwin's singing (as I always am); in particular, his blend of soft ballad-style singing with some true Heavy Metal screaming. He and his band are true originals of hard rock and they remain one of the most underrated bands of all time. I only bemoan the fact that only about 10% of their vinyl catalog has been released on CD. Aquarius & Capitol records, what the hell is wrong with you? Don't you know that this was one of the greatest bands you have ever had???"
