CD Reviews

Super Funny Eurodisco!
Maria Giovanna | Bagnolo Mella, Brescia Italy | 06/11/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Arabesque were Michaela Rose, Sandra Lauer and Jasmin Vetter. From 1978 to 1985, they had a lot of success in North Europe and, most of all, in Japan. Their discography included 9 LP's:
I. Arabesque First (1978)
II. Peppermint Jack (1979)
III. High Life (1980)
IV. Make Love Whenever You Can (1980)
V. Billy's Barbeque (1981)
VI. Caballero (1981)
VII. Why No Reply (1982)
VIII. Loser Pays The Piper (1983)
IX. Time To Say Goodbye (1984)
"Deluxe" offers their best hits of these years. The first CD opens up with "Hello Mr. Monkey", which was a chart topper in Germany and Japan. They were famous for they funny accents like Was-Vas in "Fly High Little Butterfly", Will-Vill in "In The Heat Of A Disco Night", Barbados-Alligators in "High Life", and the funniest passage in "Midnight Dancer": "Bring me tequila from Venezuila". Anyway, the first CD is beautiful. The second shows up their early '80's production. The opening "In For A Penny, In For A Pound", is a good song, danceable and without funny accents... The other good songs are "Caballero", a smash in Japan, "Young Fingers Get Burnt", all characterized by high-toned syntethizers. This CD offers rare tracks such as "Tropical Summenight", "Dreamin", Zanzibar, A New Sensation...and others not too good to be mentioned. This box set has a booklet with all the lyrics in english... So...if you wanna have fun...this CD is a must-have.
But don't miss the others in this store, because they also are beautiful..."
ABBA all over again?

"I never could understand why Arabesque could not make it in Europe for the most part. Their biggest singles are on the same pedestal that used to be occupied by ABBA just few years ago. Three beatiful girls with angelic voices and great dance-oriented songs that hang around in your memory long after you have heard them for the last time. And let me tell you, Sandra never was this good neither in her solo career nor with Enigma! This collection brings back the best of Arabesque in a great package once again. Of course, as it is always the case, several excellent tracks did not make it here, nost notably 'Born To Reggae', 'I Stand by You', 'Black Out' and gorgeous 'The End Of The Show'. Too bad the CD is only 80 minutes long. If you used to like ABBA and want to hear more of them, then you can't go wrong with this double CD."
