Album Description

Arlen Roth is a clean, impressive and technically innovative guitarist who established his credentials on the New York recording scene in the '70s, doing session work on albums by John Prine, Janis Ian, Dusty Springfield, Eric Anderson, Loudon Wainwright, and others. More recently he's become known for his books and columns on various popular guitar styles. This disc, drawn from his two Rounder albums, showcases over sixty minutes of a guitar master at work.

Great guitar. Singer? Songwriter? Not so much...

"I haven't heard any of his more recent albums. He is (of course) best known for his instructional books and videos. His touch is deft, funky without being overstated. I am not as high on his songs as such as the other reviewer, but they are good frameworks for his tasty playing and soloing. His singing is adequate.

His influences, esp. considering the date of this album are pretty obvious--his excellent slide playing on the first half of this album evokes Ry Cooder. A few cuts at the end (particularly the final cut) are obviously strongly influenced by Mark Knopfler. If you love these guys, you will enjoy this album--I know I did."
