"I must thank the Opera Nights website for recommending this opera by
Armas Launis an early Twentieth century Finnish composer who became a pioneer in Finnish opera. He uses a Wagnerian style and, even like Wagner writes his own librettos. Launis premiered six operas in Finland. ASlak Hetta was his last opera and s based on an actual freedom fighter from Norway who freed his country from foreign occupiers. Launis employs folk songs in his works and uses one about the Northern lights in Act I that is very beautiful. Launis is a masterful choral composer which is evident throughout the opera. Everyone involved all work together to create an exciting opera recording but the stand outs are the conductor, the chorus and the lead character tenor Ari Alammotervo. The final death scene Asklan is quite powerful .
I would highly recommend this recording to anyone interested in opera.
