"This cd comprises the 1st and 2nd official jazz messenger groups.
from 1955 and 1956. About 51 minutes long.As a Columbia jazz release, it comes with terrific notes about each the style of each composition and who plays on each track.I am told Blakey played Hard Bop which I have read is bebop with a strong swinging, rhythmic edge.Absolutely correct. Something a lover of bebop and/or a lover of swing would enjoy.Great playing, great sound, great production"

"I had the EP with "Cranky Spanky" and "Hank's symphony" on it as a high-school kid in the late 50's. So it's very exciting to have these and all the other tracks here with good sound surrounding them. Pure enjoyment for anyone who loves music that really swings. Mr. Blakey's drumming is a combination of force and style. You get the feeling he has a natural knack for this music, the drums are laid back and still keeping the big beat going. A jazz classic, this one."
