Synopsis

Album Description
"To understand Dutoit's gift, you have only to watch him lead an orchestra. Animated by the music, his conducting technique is perhaps the most graceful among living conductors. His gestural vocabulary is elegant, expressive, energetic yet tasteful, the perfect visual correlative of the music his orchestra plays. His long thin arms swirl in seamless semaphore movements, he sways like a willow tree, rising and falling like a cresting wave. He beats time with his left foot, but the rest of his body language is balletic, with the lithe grace of a man half his age. When he walks off the stage he regains his Apollonian composure, but no one would deny they were lucky to have seen him." --Philip Anson-La Scena Musicale Orchestre symphonique de Montreal Philharmonia Orchestra* Orchestre National de France ** L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande*** Charles Dutoit, conductor

CD Reviews

Essential Dutoit
M. Muckler | Pennsylvania | 12/13/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Charles Dutoit is an amazing conductor and has done a lot of good for Classical Music by leading the pack in utilizing CD as a medium [back when CDs were a new thing]. This is a broad CD collection, including some old war horses (Rite of Spring, Pictures at an Exhibition) as well as some lesser known French pieces (Les Biches). All the music is wonderfully recorded, interpreted, and played. However, what REALLY makes this set shine is the additional DVD featuring Prokofiev's "Romeo and Juliet" and "Classical Symphony." I assure everyone, it is worth purchasing for the DVD alone. The rest of the music is a great addition."
Buy for DVD alone

"If you like dance and ballet, then get this boxset for the DVD alone. The antics for Prokofiev's 'The Classical Symphony' are entertaining enough. However it's the 40mins or so of the Romeo & Juliet Suite that is so wonderful. This is dancing & choreography of the absolute first rank, a truly wonderful achievement for all those involved."
