"This is actually a complilation of FOUR disctinct dates which all feature Art Pepper, though he is NOT the leader on any of them. The main reason I bought this was to obtain a record of the first "Shorty Rogers and his Giants" session from Oct. 8, 1951 which is a seminal session..indeed some call it the birth of the "West Coast" sound. In any case, the pieces and arrangement by Rogers and the solos by Pepper are all outstanding.
The other three sessions are: Eddie Safranski's Poll Cats, with a number of Kenton-men and arrangements by Pete Rugolo (Dec 20, 1947); Babs Gonzales and His Orchestra (Mar 20, 1949) and the Shelly Manne Septet, Nov 12, 1951.
There are many great pieces, arrangements, and Pepper solos on this CD...don't miss it!"
