CD Reviews

A forgotten master
James K. Hanson | Hudson, New York | 01/30/2008
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Having attended one of the recitals published here, I bought this disc with a certain degree of trepidation. It's been a quarter of a century, after all, since I sidled in to the recital hall at the Manhattan School of Music to hear Artur Balsam play. My memories were fond ones, and I didn't want to give them up. Balsam plays beautifully here, even if his playing of the Diabelli Variations lacks the incisiveness and grandeur of Serkin. He was an honest, good workman, a sensitive musician and an effective pedagogue. One wishes there were more players like him today. At the end of the day he was not an artist on the exalted level of Schnabel, Backhaus, Serkin or Rubinstein. Nonetheless, his playing was beautiful, and well worth hearing. In some ways he was a bit like Horszowski, a gifted player who understood everything but lacked, finally, the demonic quality that excites an audience."
