Both artistically and discographically, the late forties were hit-and-miss for Arthur Rubinstein. The brusque, angular Preludes, for instance, have little of the charm and unforced lyricism typical of this pianist's Chopin. In turn, the remaining works are rather glibly nuanced in comparison to Rubinstein's aristocratic stereo remakes (or even his better recorded 1928 Barcarolle), an impression reinforced by RCA Victor's close-up, twangy sonics. --Jed Distler
