The Perils of Buying Blind....
Kurt Harding | Boerne TX | 10/29/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This CD, unlike several other Japanese compilations of Astor Piazzolla's music I have purchased, turned out to be filled with music that is mostly available on the much cheaper box set Tangamente. There is no track listing provided here but since I have found much to like about other Japanese reissues of Piazzolla's music (and much new too), I bought it sight unseen. Such are the perils of buying blind.
This 2-CD set contains two thirds of the music on the box set Tangamente with only two new songs, El Gordo Triste and Un Dia De Paz, thrown in as a sweetener and at a much higher price than the triple-disc Tangamente.
The music is great, don't get me wrong. This CD covers one of the jazziest periods of Piazzolla's career and so is important to those who want a taste of each of his bands.
The standout cuts here are those with Amelita Baltar on vocals. I particularly like her voice on Los Paraguas de Buenos Aires, Balada Para Mi Muerte, Las Ciudades, and La Primera Palabra.
Instrumental standouts include Vardarito, El Penultimo, and Jeanne y Paul which was originally written as a film theme.
Buy this, yes, but only if you are unable to obtain Tangamente."
