CD Reviews

Raw but rare!

"I knew this album was not hi-fi quality, the record company have not tried to pretend otherwise, and their honesty is very much appreciated. What really made me buy this album is that this is the only known live recording of Rooster from that era with Carl Palmer (later of ELP) on drums! With these two things in mind I playe the album for the first time, and what happens is that you are transported back to 1970 and you're listening to Atomic Rooster live in concert on the radio! To feel that you are actually back in the time when it was being played is a very odd, but pleasant, experience. Half way through Friday 13th you forget about the radio-quality sound and get into the music, then you realise what an amazing band Rooster were. Just under an hour later, when the album finishes, you feel like you have discovered a side of Rooster you never knew (unless you were ever lucky enough to see them live). The extended versions of I Can't Take No More and Shabaloo are a revelation, and the quality of musicianship is exceptional. Forget the quality of the recording and just listen to the music - let yourself be taken back to 1970 and be a part of it!"
Atomic Rooster - 'Live&Raw 1970-71' (Angel Air)

"The way I heard about this release coming to be is that John Du Cann found an aging cassette tape all dusty&filthy that still actually played and the tunes here on 'Live&Raw' were the songs on that cassette.Considering THAT factor,'Live&Raw' is quite a find, specially for all big-time Rooster fans.First four cuts are from a show they played at London's Paris Theatre in 1970 with Carl Palmer on drums. The second four cuts are also from the Paris Theatre in 1971 with Paul Hammond on drums. The tracks that I enjoyed the most are "Friday The 13th","Shabaloo","Tomorrow Night"(one of my personal Rooster favorites) and the twelve-minute version of "I Can't Take No More".The only thing I don't care for on 'Live&Raw' is the repeated introducing of the band prior to nearly every song.Other than that,it's a great title, for a low-fi archive release.Comes with a 16-page full color informative booklet,as most Angel Air discs do."
