CD ReviewsGreat single jontommer01 | Italy | 05/02/2004 (5 out of 5 stars) "at the beginning I was quite shocked. I didn't know rock could be such a spacious thing. Perhaps it's because we're listening to tons of bad material and once we get something awesome is almost a surprise! in this case, it's a wonderful surprise!" I followed the waves to you E. A Solinas | MD USA | 11/18/2004 (3 out of 5 stars) "One of the most arresting songs on Melissa Auf der Maur's solo debut is "Followed The Waves," a panoramic rock song. While imports generally have the most extras, here the single is worth it alone for the good music video slipped in along with the two songs.
A wailing intro leads up to a churning, stormy bass melody and a lament-like song in "Followed the Waves." "My heart lies, my heart lies to you/I followed the waves to you!" Auf der Maur sings in this song. The B-side is the quieter "Good News," a strummy little song with eerie backing vocals and sound effects. And then there's the music video. It opens with a glimpse of Auf der Maur's face in a necklace, singing her lungs out, while a sailing ship is on stormy seas. Cut to the band onstage, against weirdly colored backdrops, with Melissa singing and playing bass, with the image of stormy weather and the ship flits in and out from time to time. The music video isn't really outstanding -- most of it is shots of Auf der Maur and her band rocking out. But it is an entertaining view, and "Good News" is a pretty little B-side that offsets the stormier sound of "Followed the Waves." It also allows Auf der Maur to display a quieter brand of musicianship, rather than the bass-heavy sound she is noted for. Don't be put off by the mere two songs on the "Followed the Waves" single -- there actually is more, and it's worth checking out for fans of Melissa Auf der Maur's debut." |
