A rare gem

"«Songs», this excellently engineered Japanese import, took B. J. Thomas light years beyond the world of "Hooked on a Feeling." A stellar collection of songwriters (Barry Mann-Cynthia Weil, Mark James, Carole King, Gerry Goffin) supplied Thomas with all styles of music on this rare album. The musicianship is crisp and impressive throughout. The opening title tune sets a melancholy mood and ushers in Thomas's more hushed and pensive singing. "Early Morning Hush," an excellent mid-tempo by Carole King follows. It is the two extremes, however, ballads and drivers, that stand out on this CD: Thomas offers a wistful "We're Over" and a yearning "Alone Too Long" for ballads, and an embittered "Too Many Mondays" with excellent guitar work throughout. The CD's masterpiece is "Good-bye's A Long Long Time," another finely crafted tune sadly passing into oblivion. It is a perfect meld of vocals and arrangement, building from ballad to rock to a soulful tag. A few social commentary songs are thrown in for good measure (it's the 1970s!): the twangy "Down on the Street," about the homeless and the slam at Nixon's aggressive notion of peace, "Honorable Peace". A CD worth owning--even at this price."
