CD ReviewsGroove incarnate... sanspotash | Minneapolis, MN | 10/20/2004 (5 out of 5 stars) "Easily one of the best downbeat albums available. I've owned it for awhile and am still amazed at how quickly it takes me in every time I have it on rotation. If you like esl, if you enjoy K & D and all of their projects, then this is your next purchase. yo" A fine collection of that Other top downtempo band from Hull Richard Diaz | 01/28/2001 (4 out of 5 stars) "Baby Mammoth have been doing the downtempo/funk gig as long as anyone, avoiding even the brief flickers of spotlight that occasionally hit Britain's Hull-based Pork Recordings other notables, Fila Brazilla. After six years and as many albums (and numerous remixes) it's finally time for recognition and credit, and what better way than with a mix disc culling hits from past work.Slow-burning grooves, a sublime sense of stoner funk, old soul samples, and a light sense of playfulness, it's all here for smooth consumption on those lazy, hazy days. Highlights include "Dark Goggles" where shuffle jazz meets X-Files, and the gentle, percolating "Hoodwinked." Or perhaps I should mention the scuzzy jazz of "Tasty Maloney," or the - well, I could go on. Sure there's a dip or two, "Slipping Jigsaws" belongs in b-movie soundtrack purgatory, but that's the price you pay for an album reaching beyond simple navel-gazing.Distribution, like their press coverage, is spotty at best, but sofa spotters wanting a slice of heaven should dig around for this one. You want to hear what the album-hunters are all talking about, don't you? Grade: B+"
