Synopsis

Album Description
'Bessie Smith in Stereo' said jazz critic Leonard Feather in Playboy when Barbara Dane burst onto the scene in the late '50s. Time magazine said of her: 'The voice is pure, rich...rare as a 20 karat diamond.' During the 1960's Dane performed and recorded blues, folk, and jazz music in her own style on several labels -- one result is this 1966 collaboration with the Chambers Brothers that found this wonderful woman joining forces with the young group of African Americans that would later hit big with their psychedelic soul song Time Has Come Today. On CD for the first time!

CD Reviews

Just before Woodstock
T. Simmons | New Hope, PA/Bristol, UK | 03/05/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This album marries American folk singing with gospel harmonies, a white female citizen of the world with the unbelievably talented Chambers Brothers, courageous civil rights protesting with righteous sincerity. If you were there, this takes you back and makes the hair on the back of your neck stand in attention. If you weren't there, you can learn what it was like almost first-hand by experiencing this music.

After this everything changed. The Chambers Brothers went to Woodstock and got famous. I don't know where Barbara Dane went. But, she probably continued being a very talented and courageous human being. She is to be applauded for being this kind of woman.

This is a piece of American history that is not to be ignored."
