CD Reviews

Barabara Rosene: The Best Singer in Her Genre Ever!
Edward J Vasicek | Kokomo, IN USA | 02/09/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Barbara Rosene has an ideal voice for singing songs of the 1920's and 30's. Although she often sings the popular songs of the 20's and early 30's (in my opinion, better than Annette Hanshaw or Ruth Etting), her laid-back, mellow voice does just as well with these light jazz/romantic songs of the 30's and 40's. Her rendition of "You Are Too Beautiful" is plain awesome. She has no intonation, phrases her songs meaningfully, and never over-exaggerates. She's just the best.

Unfortunately, Amazon does not carry her other CD's, but they are worth searching for. I have purchased them all. Go for it."
Charming vintage tunes and sprightly songstress
Thomas Bumbera | Maplewood, NJ USA | 10/26/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Barbara Rosene has heretofore been known for having a voice uncannily similar to that of 20s chanteuse Annette Hanshaw, and has recorded with 20s-styled groups such as Giordano's Nighthawks. With this disc, she proves that she is equally comfortable with contemporary jazz backing, although the tunes are mostly 30s-vintage, neglected gems of the Golden Age of popular songwriting. So Babs moves forward while still looking back. If you recognize the titles of four or more of these songs, you should probably own this disc!"
Fresh Approach To Familiar Standards
Barry McCanna | Normandy, France | 07/16/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I've a friend in America to thank for introducing me to Barbara Rosene. Having long collected recordings of the twenties and thirties I was just blown away. Unlike today's lyrics (too distinguished a term, but let that pass) those from that bygone age related to life, and can't just be trotted out. Barbara is the ideal interpreter, putting her remarkable voice at their service. Unlike some of her other recordings (which are well worth seeking out also) the accompaniment does not rely on the original arrangements, thus providing a fresh approach to these familiar standards.

PS. What an unfortunate typo in the listing thoughtfully provided by the previous reviewer. Track 7 should read "Blame It On My Youth"."
