Synopsis
Album Description Personnel includes: Barry Adamson (various instruments); Louise Ness (vocals); Kenlow (guitar); Joe Sax (saxophone); Seamus Beaghen (guitar, piano, Hammond organ); Ivor Guest, Atticus Ross (programming). Engineers: Kevin Petrie, John Hudson. Recorded at E-zoo Studios and Mayfair Studios, London, England. Former Magazine bassist Adamson has reinvented himself as a hip new type of celluloid hero. Any resemblance between the progressive, post-punk jingoism of his previous band is, at best, coincidental. The truth is that you'd hardly recognize him. Yet Adamson's reincarnation as a rock-imbibed Morricone has already produced an impressive, full-bodied catalog of sounds and ideas. THE NEGRO INSIDE ME, the latest "soundtrack" from the urban jungle of Adamson's mind, bristles with urgent dance rhythms, bleating aural sirens, and Raymond Chandler-esque tech-noir melodies. "Busted" is a seething combination of the best elements of "Peter Gunn," "Secret Agent Man," and the James Bond themes, disassembled and re-energized into an irresistibly magnetic opulence. While there are certainly many musicians out there involved in creating soundtracks to films from the id, Adamson prefers to blend random fragments from the vast oeuvre of movie music--snippets of traditional piano licks, skittering stabs of jazzy percussion--with the more brazen sensibilities of his new-wave roots. CD ReviewsOverlooked! Kris | Palm Bay, FL United States | 08/31/2000 (5 out of 5 stars) "This album is jazz, industrial and hip-hop thrown in a groove blender. If you enjoy Adamson's work, you will not be disapointed by this low price but high quality CD. There are but six tracks, but each one of them is an excellent experiment in dancable, nightmarish music, and many of the tracks are lengthy. Perfect for listening to while doing private eye work, seducing a mystery woman or man, or simply losing control of your mind. If you like Admason, I would also recommend Angelo Badalamenti, Mogwai, Jocelyn Pook, David Bowie, and Don Davis. Also, for more Adamson, look into Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Big Country, Anita Lane and other releases from MUTE RECORDS." Smooth, solid, smart Rob Lightner | 02/21/2002 (4 out of 5 stars) "Barry Adamson is one smart fella. He's got a film-score genius' synesthetic talent for visual audio and an acidic but bemused wit. His work ages well - nearly ten years later, The Negro Inside Me still burns. The first track is a little weak, revolving around a PR flack's message that's only interesting the first time. From there the album gathers speed and strength, peaking with the energetic Cold Black Preach and the Serge Gainsbourg remix/tribute Je T'aime...Moi Non Plus. Adamson's work is so consistently good that it's hard to pick a starting point, so I reckon this EP is as good a place as any."
