Great CD if you want a good sampling of greatest hits. CD1 I listen to repeatedly because it has the hits that were most played. CD2 has a couple of hits that I liked; I skip through the others. This is my only Manilow CD so overall I am very happy with the collection of songs included.

+ 1/2 stars...All the Manilow You'll Ever Need (Almost)

"When Arista released ULTIMATE MANILOW in 2002, that single-disc collection left off a handful of Manilow's 25 Top 40 hits from the Eighties. Three years later THE ESSENTIAL MANILOW attempts to rectify that problem with a two-disc collection containing 34 songs. In addition to duplicating all 20 tracks from the earlier hits collection, the new anthology makes room for "When I Wanted You" (No. 20, 1980), "I Don't Want To Walk Without you" (No. 36, 1980), "Memory" (No. 39, 1983), "Some Kind of Friend" (No. 26, 1983) and "Read 'Em and Weep" (No. 18, 1984), as well as album favorites "Jump Shout Boogie" and a live version of "New York City Rhythm." However, it should be noted that two missing hits from 1982 ("Let's Hang On" and "Oh Julie") keep this from being complete. But this is a minor complaint. For serious Manilow fans, this is a near perfect collection from the reigning king of easy listening music. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED"
An excellent, but not perfect, Manilow collection.

"Some reasons for Manilow fans to buy this new "Essential" collection: 1)more of Manilow's hits have been gathered together here than anywhere else save the box set (and that collection contained numerous alternate versions of hits) 2)the original single mixes of "Could It Be Magic" and "It's A Miracle" are included instead of their LP counterparts 3)"Can't Smile Without You" doesn't fade a few seconds early as it did on "Ultimate Manilow" 4)the rare club mix of Manilow's lone RCA hit "I'm Your Man" is featured here for the first time ever on CD and it is far superior to the original version.

Now here are some reasons why I was disappointed in this collection: 1)I prefer the studio version of "Jump Shout Boogie". The live version is included here even though it's not stated as such on the track listing. This is one of my favorite Manilow songs and although it wasn't one of his hit singles, I think any comprehensive collection of Manilow material should include the studio version. 2)I wish they would give us a shorter version of "Copacobana" 3)although other reviews here have stated that "Daybreak" is the single version from the "Live" album (and the track listing says it's live), my copy of "Essential" has the studio version. I don't know if the other reviewers are mistaken, or if my disc is one copy of an unfortunate run that included the wrong version by mistake.

If I could have this same collection with the live single version of "Daybreak", the studio version of "Jump Shout Boogie", a shorter version of "Copacobana", and Manilow's great cover of Shakin' Stevens' "Oh Julie", then I would have the perfect Manilow collection."
