"All these reviews comparing Stanton Moore and the like don't really listen to what this CD has to offer. Moore is a drummer who's whole CD has the drum as the lead sound....how can you compare it to this? It's like apples and oranges. The Mix-Up is smoother and highlights other instruments throughout.



I think it's a great way for the BB's to put out there what they are really about. It speaks to me; a Chicago born - blues fed - grew up in the 80's and have watched and enjoyed the Beastie Boys through all their metemorphises girl. I love me some bass guitar led, funky, close your eyes and feel it creep all up in ya music.



If you can appreciate instrumental grooves, blues, punk, rock, or even a 70's vibe.....throw this one in your collection. Right up there with Booker T...no lie. Different, but both great in their own way.

"Who knew when we hear Licence To Ill in 1986 that the Beastie Boys, twenty years on, would be one of the hippist bands on planet Earth. It first became evident to me on 1998s Hello Nasty, but even then, I had no idea I was listening to the best jazz trio just right of Medeski, Martian and Wood.



Wonder the difference? Well, I did too, but on listening more to both, I found MMW put funk into their jazz, where the Beastie Boys do the reverse. And on Mix Up, the boys have a pretty diverse pallate, mixing the swing and funk of Jimmy Smith with the dissonence, at times, of Larry Young. They use all kinds of fuzz and treaments on the organ.



But this also sound modern, mixing this 1950s and 60s soul/jazz trio impulse with beats informed by Hip Hop. It may not be totally origional, but given the current state of music, the Beastie Boys have it going on more than 99% of the big names.
