"This is a generous collection, with the Ninth "Choral" Symphony, the Choral Fantasy, all three incarnations of the "Leonore" overture plus the Fidelio and Consecration of the House. The Ninth is with Masur and the Leipzig orchestra and it is pretty sloppy in places and has consistently poor sound quality by today's standards. Even the wonderful singing of Peter Schreier and Theo Adam cannot save this Ninth. It is not anywhere near a first choice for this symphony. However, the Choral Fantasy with Alfred Brendel and Haitink leading the London Philharmonic is another matter entirely. It is a completely exhilirating affair from beginning to end with fantastic contribution from the London Philharmonic Choir. Brendel is nothing less than his Beethoven loving self and the orchestra sounds glorious. Better than average sound quality here. The overtures are fine, though not up to the same quality as the Fantasy. So, a mixed bag. If I had it to do again, I probably would not have purchased this set but I am pleased to own it for the Fantasy at least."
