Beethoven was a natural master of the variation form of extemporaneous improvisation--which makes him the very first jazzman!
Most critics assert that the Diabelli Variations are the ne plus ultra of Beethoven's variation art. I don't argue this. I can only say that I've always had a little difficulty approaching the Diabelli set; nevertheless, Scherbakov does a great job here, and for the first time I really like the Diabellies. (An earlier recording by Arrau is out of print, I think.)
Plus, for me, Beethoven's wonderful sets of variations on British melodies are two of his best piano sets--especially fine is "God Save the Queen."
Recorded sound is excellent."
