What Lieder should be.

"Fischer-Dieskau was one of the great lieder singers of all time. His singing Beethoven songs in good sound is a musical experience which a far greater writer than I would be needed to describe, perhaps Shakespeare himself."

"I'm fast becoming a connoisseur of the various recordings of An die ferne Geliebte. I've been listening to everything I can get my hands on as I'm preparing this cycle for an upcoming recital, and let me tell you, there isn't much worth your time. Wunderlich is good if you want a tenor; listen to Lotte Lehmann for an older, unabashedly romantic version (off copyright: download online from the Lotte Lehmann Foundation at http://lottelehmann.org/llf/lehmann/sings/index.html#lieder). The Matthias Goerne and Alfred Brendel CD with Schubert's Schwanengesang isn't bad, either.

But let me tell you, this recording is just impeccable. Granted, I was already a big FD fan before I heard this, no convert here. His interpretation, his immaculate attention to detail, makes this the most steady, passionate, simultaneously tender and exciting recording available. He just relishes in the language, makes every verse of repeating melody different and meaningful. You really just can't get any better. It's well worth it, for the Beethoven lover, the Lieder lover, Fischer-Dieskau lover, anyone. Fischer-Dieskau and Jörg Demus think together as one unit, every subtle adjustment of tempo, of dynamic is perfect. They're absolutely unstoppable, it makes me wonder why everyone else hasn't given up trying. This is by far the definitive recording."
