"This is an 8 disc set that comes in a boxed set of two plastic cases holding 4 cds each. It consists of the complete string quartets of Beethoven performed by the Hungarian Quartet as well as the Archduke Trio as a filler on the last disc. The Trio is from 1961 and the quartets are 1966 recordings; all are in stereo. It is my understanding that the Hungarian Quartet were the first to record the complete string quartets of Beethoven on LPs. That set was recorded in the early 50's with monaural sound.
Sonically, interpretively, and any other way you wish to look at this set, it is splendid. For the listed price, it is simply a tremendous bargain. I only recently obtained this set and was immensely pleased. Don't hesitate to obtain this very fine set. It is better than most modern sets and holds its own against the best of modern sets. Very satisfying. Very cheap. What could be better?
