"After hearing Robert Taub featured on Trenton's classical music radio station and hearing him perform at the Institue for Advanced Studies in Princeton, I bought this CD. I have found Taub's eloquence and mastery of Beethoven's Sonatas throughly mezmerizing and I had to get all three volumes. In fact, this collection has become my standard gift to friends who enjouy outstanding classical piano performances. This set is a must have... highly recommended! Also, Robert Taub is a must see if you can get to see him perform."

"I believe that this entire set of the complete Sonatas has been reissued in two volumes of books that you can find on Amazon by searching for Robert Taub in Books. This first volume of his set is in general very rewarding. It says something about the reach of this artist that he is equally at home in the piano music of Milton Babbitt and of Beethoven, although what he finds in Babbitt is beyond me. I walked out of one of Taub's recitals of Babbitt's music in Princeton years ago. As a pianist, Taub is a formidable but not entirely stylish technician. He can hit all the notes without too much trouble (You have to take my word for this on a case by case basis.), although he does not have the ingratiating tone in Beethoven that one hears from Richard Goode or Maurizio Pollini. Nevertheless, Taub is a sensitive player and ferociously intelligent. Rarely have I heard Beethoven's harmonic language spelled out to such great effect. Surprisingly, one of the best performances on the album is of the Moonlight Sonata. Taub captures its shifting moods with great effectiveness, an accomplishment both of intelligence and emotional empathy. The Waldstein is nearly as good, with Taub putting together the big moments very well if with some rough edges. My other favorite interpretation on the album is of the First Sonata. Taub fully appreciates the revolutionary aspect of Beethoven's language while maintaining classical form. All the performances on this album are at least somewhat rewarding, although there are prosaic moments. You probably won't want this as your sole Beethoven Sonata cycle, but it is always intriguing to see what Taub is thinking. The sound engineering throughout is clear and generally full."
