"When it comes to Beethoven, the Tokyo Quartet is superb and their newest traversal of these masterpieces is no exception. I hesitated to give my review of these recordings since the price seems to rise whenever glowing reviews are posted, but I couldn't resist.
While maintaining the high standards of its first set, the Tokyos have given us a more thoughtful, perhaps even a more beautiful traversal than its first set. The recordings are more detailed with much less "bloom" than the RCA set, and I found that an increase in the bass adjustment of my receiver produced fine results. Indeed, it is one of the finest recordings of performances of these pieces that are currently available.
This set, along with the Op.59 set, is offered at very reasonable prices, and I hope they stay that way. Cheaper, better recorded, and better performed than the Takacs set, I find this set to be indispensible for any lover of these works. I look forward with great anticipation to the Tokyo's recordings of the late quartets.
