Skrowaczewski's Beethoven in the manner of Toscanini

"Stanislaw Skrowaczewski's ongoing cycle of Beethoven Symphonies with the Saarbrucken Radio Orchestra is in the manner of Toscanini and Szell in a more Classical mold: light textures, generally fast tempos in I and IV movements and clear woodwind lines. Oehms gives Maestro Skrowaczewski very good and balanced sound. I give this 5 stars, and highly recommend it, unless you MUST have the more Romantic treatment of Furtwangler, Bruno Walter, Karl Bohm, Herbert von Karajan, or Bernstein/Vienna Philharmonic.
In some ways, Skrowaczewski's interpretations resemble period orchestra recordings of the 1980s and 90s by Norrington, Hogwood, or Bruggen, but the Saarbrucken orchestra is definitely modern instruments.
Thus far, Symphonies 1 + 4, 2 + 3 (Reviewed here), 5 + 6, and 9 have been released. 7 + 8 are yet to be released as of this date (Nov. 9, 2006).
My remarks are general and a movement by movement description is unnecessary. There are no glaring new innovations in Skrowaczewski's performances, but these are among the best recordings I have heard of Beethoven 2 (along with Bohm/Vienna/DG; Karajan/Berlin/DG; Bernstein/New York/Sony; and Drahos/Esterhazy Sinfonia/Naxos) and Beethoven 3 (along with Bohm/Vienna/DG; Furtwangler/Vienna/EMI; Furtwangler/Berlin/Archipel; and Szell/Cleveland/Sony).
Highly recommended!"
